The Last King of Sri Lanka

The last king of Sri Lanka

In the history of the Sri Lanka, many kings have ruled the country's and the last king of the country is considered to be king ''Sri Wikrama Rajasinghe''. Acording to the Nayakkar dunasty, in 1798, with the support of ''Plimathalawa'' who was the Maha Adikaram at that time, the princes ''Muththusami'' Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe became the king of Kandy. Accordingly, in 1803 the Kandyan kingdom was invaded by the then English goverment Fedrick North, and the king was able to defeat it. later 1810 he was outsed from the post  Adikaram of Pilimathalawa thinking that he was not in favor of him and appointed Ehelepola Adhikaram.

After a while, the king became supieious of Ehelepola, thinking that Ehelepola was responsible for the revolt in sabaragamuwa against the King in 1814. and informed him to meet him, but Ehelepola fled to the British. In retaliation, King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe brutally killed the children including Ehelepola Kumarihami. By this time the King was obeying the language of his relatives and was strongly addicted to alcohol. John Doyle, a freind of the king at that time, sent western liquor to the King to make him an alcoholic. The people hated the King because of his bad deeds.  Acordingly the relationship between the King and the people was serverd. Taking advantage of this, the English invaded the upcountry in 1815 and the Kings and queens fled. There the King was captured by a gruop of Ehelepola soldiers and John Doyle took the King to Colombo and in January 1816 deported him to the Vellore fort in Madras as a prisoner. Accordingly, the dynasty of Sri Lankan kings came to an end.
